Use appropriate register and intonation while reading aloud, demonstrating an understanding of the function of punctuation marks (full stop, exclamation, question mark, apostrophe, comma, speech quotes) Read aloud confidently in pairs or groups for an audience, with awareness of proper punctuation and pronunciation Distinguish between narration/exposition and speech, use different voices for reading of different characters
Predict what or who the story is going to be about with pictoral clues and title (pre-reading) Use visualization as a strategy to better understand a scene in a story, a place or a character. Children read a text and try to imagine and see the setting/scene/character in their mind with descriptive details from the teacher Use questioning as a strategy to comprehend a text better (The 6 W words - Who, What, Where, When, Why)
Use of Reading Strategies Compare and contrast between characters/events using venns ( after reading) Scan an informational text to locate specific information.e.g. TV channel listings for a specific show, railway timetable for a specific train, menu Scan longer texts to locate specific information in brochures, pamphlets, official documents etc
Use sentence starters to make inferences about a story.e.g. The story said ______ which made me think ______ ( after reading) Apply understanding of phrasal verbs/idioms to understand implied meanings (differentiate between literal and figurative language) Use intonation appropriately to suit the content and context
Pronounce words as clearly as possible with little or no native language accent. E.g. some commonly mispronounced words are ask, live & leave, Dip & deep, Blue, Threw etc. Pronounce words correctly with practice, though the listener may still have to ask for clarification Pronounce words correctly with few or no instances of mispronunciation
Comprehension Recall facts and important details related to the text read - fiction and non-fiction Understand and respond to Feelings and Ideas expressed in a text - fiction and non-fiction Express opinions based on the fictional/non fictional text read with supporting arguments
