English Room is a flagship English language enrichment program that began in 2008 with one school in Mumbai. By 2022, the program had reached over 7,500 students and established dedicated English Rooms in 10 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools.
Program Objective & Vision
The objective of English Room is to enhance English proficiency among students studying in BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) schools.
Guided by the vision to “empower every child with English literacy and 21st-century skills to make them job-ready,” the program focuses on building functional English, confidence, and essential life skills among first-generation learners with limited exposure to English outside the classroom.
Rationale
Most students in BMC schools are first-generation learners with limited exposure to English outside the classroom. Functional English plays a critical role in enabling better career opportunities, higher education access, and active participation in a globalized world. English Room were designed to bridge this gap by creating a supportive, engaging, and immersive English-learning environment.

Program Overview
English Room is an interactive learning space within schools that focuses on improving students’ Functional English. The program leverages global ESL (English as a Second Language) pedagogy and an in-house curriculum aligned with the state syllabus. Learning is delivered through innovative, activity-based methods that promote confidence, comprehension, and communication skills.
The curriculum is organized around five broad themes and integrates 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.

We introduced theatre as a joyful and safe space for students to express themselves, build confidence, and use English meaningfully. What began as a way to bring stories alive has grown into a powerful tool for strengthening language skills, creativity, collaboration, and real-life communication.
Biodiversity & Environmental Awareness
Biodiversity content was introduced to help students understand and appreciate the wide variety of life around them. Through stories, discussions, and hands-on activities, students learn to care for nature and recognize their role in protecting the environment.
